Name: Edwin, Angela, Sam MODEL PRESENTATION OUTLINE NOTES As you follow my presentation, take notes on what I do for each of the criterion. I am asking you to evaluate me on the following. Ø content Ø activities Ø raising awareness and interest Part One: Background (opening based on persuasive paragraph and reflection question about the issues in general)
Why is this issue a global one? What is the main problem?
Torture is used all over the world on a daily basis, it is used in many ways, such as punishing those who committed a crime or did something wrong. The main problem with torture is that some countries can be very inhumane with the way they treat these people and it goes against human rights. Some people don't know what human rights are, this prevents them from fighting for what they really deserve, humane punishment.
How is this issue affecting the world?
The frequency of torture rapidly increases all around the world as time goes by, and not very many people understand the concept of human rights. The entire world is affected by this because every country will have to cooperate with each other at one point in their existence, and torture is used when someone is blamed for a mishap. Every country needs to make sure that human rights are applied to their form of torture before it is too late. Even some countries with high morals will sometimes go overboard with their torture and completely throw the "human rights" idea out the window.
What is being done to stop, prevent or fix this issue?
In 1882, United States signed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1948, United States signed the Geneva Convention. Other actions taken to prevent this issue includes sending a letter to the state congressmen talking about inhuman punishment and human rights, these ideas can and will be passed on to higher ranking officers. Recently, President Obama released many prisoners from Guantánamo, and many laws have been placed for torture performed in United States. Part Two: Case Study (the specific area chosen to focus on)
What background information was shared on a specific area?
You provided these statistics: More than 100 detainees have died in U.S. custody since 2002. 27 of these cases were suspected or confirmed homicides. At least 7 detainees were tortured to death. 770 detainees who have endured Gauntánamo, 500 have been released without formal charges or trial. 200 or more who remain in detention, only 23 have been charged with a crime. You also showed us pictures showing wires threaded through wide arms and prisoners tied into cells, isolated. Finally, a movie to show how criminals are tortured was presented. Also, you provided some quotes showing loopholes and explaining how and why the US acted like this.
Interactive Activity (this should be related to your case study and involve audiences' members in order to educate them more on your topic): What did I do?
You were going to get us to write three human rights down to help us realize what we thought of the topic, to help raise awareness so things can be done.
Part Three: Action Plan:
What do I propose to do?
You propose to start a group called Students for Justice. You propose that US citizens should right to their senators and that non-US citizens can either get their US citizen friends to write, or they can speak up through organizations. You suggest we spread the message and learn about the issue. You propose that everyone should be aware of their rights so they can't be taken from them.
The parts of my plan:
The purpose- Why am I doing this action?
You are trying to raise awareness in the school community of the torture of prisoners by the US government so that you can encourage SAS to join global communities to stop this inhumane action.
The message- Why should people be informed about this issue?
You are convinced that the more people who know what is happening, the more likely that they will speak up. You think that if more people speak up and are supported by the general population, the world can work together to say that human rights must be protected at all times.
A short-term plan for achieving my goal (remember is should be kept simple and not too ambitious- again make sure it CAN actually be done). What do I propose to do?
Your short-term plan is to learn more about the issue yourself to better understand it. Also, you wish to raise awareness in SAS about the torture of prisoners by the US government.
A long-term plan for achieving my goal. What is my long-term plan?
You plan to continue advocating and fighting for the rights of prisoners through college, high school, and as an adult.
Reference to information on wiki and other resources: What references do I make?
You name who said what quote for each slide, and you give URLs for pictures, videos and poems or other literature taken from websites. You name exactly where you got the information as well as what slide you used it on.
Part Four: Conclusion- (Make sure to leave them thinking and inspired to do something themselves!). What do I do to conclude my presentation? Mr. Gilli said many things that will inspire viewers to help, he made them sound easy and simple so that people will actually want to help instead of sitting there and thinking "wow, that's tedious, I'll let someone else do it." Mr. Gilli mentioned about how U.S citizens could send their state representative (senator or congressman) a letter about human rights and torture. Then he set a good example by mentioning that he is going to write a letter himself. Advice is stronger if the person giving it has already experienced it and set a good example. Mr. Gilli did mention that he has written some letters to his state's senator in the past. Another thing Mr. Gilli did was that he read a short story/quote written by Pastor Martin Niemoeller, this quote fits into the topic of torture really well. It shows what will happen if no one acts or takes action before it is too late. It really emphasizes the fact that having the "I don't care, someone else will take action" attitude won't help, because if no one takes action, then nothing will happen. Overall, Mr. Gilli concluded his presentation by convincing his viewers to take action.
